Many thanks to all those involved in umpiring, marshalling, bribing people to marshal, bank steering and so on, particularly today in the horrible weather.

Most times (i.e. those that didn't disintigrate completely in the downpour) are available, so if you want to find out a specific result contact me at cuwbc@cucbc.org.

CUWBC Hon Sec election

A reminder that the elections for the CUWBC hon sec will take place on Monday, and that all women's boat club captains are eligible to vote.

Votes by proxy must be with me by midnight tomorrow (although I appreciate your only options are Sarah or RON!)
The manifesto of the only candidate, Sarah Allen, is below.

Notes and Fines

Notes and fines from the Umpires will be shown here after each day of racing.

Tuesday

Notes

CCAT M1 and Homerton M1 will be rerowing tomorrow...possibly after M4 or possibly after M1. They will be marshalling at the Motorway Bridge on the meadow side i.e. well out of the way of the racing line! Please be aware that they are there and do not hit them...

The Penny Ferry is under new management and a long term contract. They would like it to be made aware that they will be very welcoming rowers/coxes/etc into the pub and that Malaysian cuisine will be on sale until 4pm every day. Whether this is standard practice for them or whether they are doing this especially for Bumps I don't yet know...

Fines

Caius W2 - Excessive bank party: £15
Corpus - No marshal: £15
Christ's M2 - Failure to clear (early celebration): £20
Downing M2 - Failure to clear - £25

Wednesday

Notes

Caius, Downing, Girton and Pembroke W1 crews will be rerowing tomorrow straight after M4. They will row down with M4 and will be marshalling at the Motorway Bridge on the meadow side i.e. well out of the way of the racing line but this may change depending on conditions. Please be aware that they are there and do not hit them. W2 are to marshal on Chesterton at their normal time of 1.55pm, but *not on the Reach* so if these W1 crews go all the way then they have a clear river. As soon as W1 are clear, we will push off W2.

Fines

Downing M1 - Failure to clear after "bumping" Jesus: £20
Emma M3 - Late acknowledgement: £20
King's M2 - Failure to clear: £30
Magdalene M3 - Excessive bank party: £15
Peterhouse W1 - Excessive bank party: £15
St. Edmund's M1 - Celebration before clearing: £20
Sidney Sussex - No marshal: £15
Trinity Hall - No marshal: £15
Trinity Hall M1 - Excessive bank party: £15
Cruiser pilot - Crashing into Jesus M1: 20 years hard labour

Thursday

Notes

Did anyone see a large barrow (the kind kept at Colleges for carting around luggage) being wheeled away from the Gunshed yesterday? If so, please email Ian and myself asap!

Please ensure coxes know a) what finish they are going to and b) where their finish is! The number of coxes I've seen hurtling past their finish despite umpires and bank parties telling them to wind down and not hit the slow crews ahead is astonishing.

Fines

Caius W2 - Failure to easy: £20
CCAT M1 - Late acknowledgement: £20
Downing W1 - Failure to clear: £30
Emmanuel - No marshal (second offence): £30
FaT M2 - Excessive bankparty: £15

Jesus M1 - Excessive bankparty: £15
King's M1 - Failure to clear and celebration: £40
Magdalene M3 - Foul language: £20
Pembroke M3 - Dangerous coxing: £25
Robinson M1 - Dropped bung: £15
Sidney Sussex - No marshal (second offence): £30

Friday

Notes

We are going to get a larger number on the towpath tomorrow, students and public alike. Be careful on the bikes and also be careful with the language...

Fines

Caius W1 - Dropped bung: £15
Christ's M1 - Celebration before clearing: £20
Darwin - No marshal: £15
Girton M2 - Foul and abusive language: £30
Magdalene W2 - Failure to clear: £20
Newnham W2 - Failure to clear: £20
Sidney Sussex M2 - Foul and very abusive language: £50
Sidney Sussex W2 - Dropped bung: £15

Saturday

Notes

Runners count as bankparty too and are equally likely to get in the way. Mays brings ten times the number of spectators...keep it in mind...

Rule Change - Flags

Please note that, following a vote at the last Captains' meeting, Rules 13b and 13c in the 2007-08 Handbook have been amended with immediate effect to read as follows:

13(b): That only University crews with the specific permission of one of their senior coaches may row when both the Red and Yellow Flags are flown at Goldie Boathouse.

13(c): That only University crews, first boats and boats in the first two divisions of the May Bumps (Men) or first boats and boats in the first division of the May Bumps (Women), first fours, or tub pairs be allowed on the water when a Yellow Flag is flown at Goldie Boathouse. In the case of tub pairs, Rule 17 applies and, in addition, the person steering must be competent and experienced.

Under Yellow Flag conditions, members of crews permitted to boat under these regulations may do so in small boats provided that they have the express permission of their Club Captain and/or Boatman and subject to the conditions outlined in Rule 18.

Please remember that these rules are 'permissive' and that it is still up to each cox of crews eligible to boat under a Yellow Flag to determine whether or not it is safe for his or her particular crew to do so.

Lent Bumps 2008

The Lent Bumps 2008 ran from 26/02/2008 - 01/03/2008. Results and Notes and Fines from the Umpires are available here.

» Final Results are now available online: Men | Women

» Saturday's Notes and Fines are also now listed online.

Watching the Bumps

Spectators are encouraged to come down and lend their support to crews from their college; directions may be found below.

You may find the map of the River Cam useful.

Spectators are reminded that the towpath during Bumps is very busy, and for safety reasons, all cyclists must be in possesion of a valid bank pass. Bank passes for crews are available from your boatclub's captain. Bank parties are limited to four cyclists per crew, and runners are not permitted.

Note that use of megaphones by bank parties is strictly forbidden during racing for coaching or giving distances, but boatmen and coaches may use them to give instructions to crews facing potentially dangerous situations.

How to get there

The majority of the Bumps course is downstream of the Penny Ferry pub (formerly the Pike & Eel). The Plough pub is also a popular vantage point, as many bumps occur around Grassy Corner and Ditton Corner. The Control Desk is located at the start of the towpath - simply find your way to this point, and carry on walking down the towpath (the entire course is approximately 2.6km):
